Essential oils are beneficial to humans, however, they can potentially be toxic to our beloved pets so it is important to know about essential oils and pet safety. What is safe for us might not be for them, so it is important to speak with your veterinarian before using essential oils either topically or in a diffuser when pets may be sharing your home or coming into contact with you when oils have been applied to your skin.
I like to use an ultrasonic essential oil diffuser in my studio to promote a sense of calm and relaxation during portrait photography sessions. However, it is important to be mindful that both humans and their pet friends may be sensitive to the scents and components in natural oils. During a consultation, I always ask if a client or their pets who will be attending a photography session have any scent sensitivities or allergies, and provide a scent-free experience when requested.
I am also mindful that several essential oils that are great for humans may be toxic to our furry friends. Every individual is different, and some pets may be more sensitive than others. Of course it is always best to ask your veterinarian regarding the use of essential oils around your pets, but here is a list of oils that I have researched to be harmful to cats and dogs:

If you are using essential oils in your home and have pets always remember to use caution. Pay attention when you begin using essential oils around pets and monitor them for any adverse reactions. Ensure your pets have the ability to freely enter and leave rooms should they find the aroma overpowering or irritating. Be mindful of pets such as birds and rodents who are in cages or enclosed spaces as they will not be able to move to a new location if they become uncomfortable. If you notice any unusual behavior or symptoms then remove your pets to a well-ventilated room immediately and discontinue use. For severe distress contact your vet immediately. Be sure to allow topical essential oils to be absorbed fully before handling your pets, as they could inadvertently lick or rub onto them by accident. And of course, be sure to store your essential oil products and diffusers in a safe place where they won’t be accidentally ingested or knocked over.
Pets of all kinds are welcome at the Alana Lee Photography studio, but please contact us and let us know if they will be joining you for your photography session so we can ensure their comfort, safety and wellness by providing a scent-free experience!
